My daily (and nightly) skin care routine

One of the most common questions I get is this: “Can you recommend a good moisturizer?”

If only it was so easy. I’ve probably tried about 4,572 moisturizers in my time as a magazine beauty editor and now on-air beauty expert. And I’ve loved a lot of them, but there are plenty I haven’t loved.

The thing is, one moisturizer that’s right for me today (in the dead of winter) won’t be right for me in six months’ time (in the sunny humid heat!). And just because I love a moisturizer doesn’t mean you will.

But the bigger issue: one moisturizer is just not going to cut it. You need to layer your skin care products like a French woman layers her clothes, if you really want to see a difference in your skin’s appearance.

I was reminded of this recently when I went to an event hosted by Shoppers Drug Mart’s beautyBOUTIQUE. The thing I love about beautyBOUTIQUE is that I no longer have to head to a department store, at a mall, to get the prestige brands I love. But the other thing I love is that beautyBOUTIQUE has in-house beauty experts and pharmacists who can help you find your own customized skincare routine. Which is exactly what they did for me by asking me questions about my skin, daily routine, and then taking a closer look at my skin using the Moisture Checker, this specialized tool that measures your skin’s hydration levels. Next they used a video microscope that magnified the skin’s surface 30X to help identify any conditions: clogged pores, dry or oily skin, sun damage, dilated capillaries, brown spots or signs of pollution in the skin. With all this information (read: how dry my skin was!), the beauty expert recommended a skincare routine to boost my hydration levels and deal with fine lines. Here’s what he recommended to me and the product combo I’ve been using for about a month so far and loving.

Daytime Routine:

Vichy Mineral89

After cleansing my skin, I apply a pre-serum. That’s right, a serum before my serum. The pre-serum makes the products you apply after work even more effectively. I was prescribed Vichy Mineral 89 Fortifying & Hydrating Daily Skin Booster with Hyaluronic Acid. It’s a super lightweight feeling gel formula that’s not greasy and really takes what Vichy is known best for—its thermal waters—along with hyaluronic acid to strengthen the skin’s barrier function and boost hydration. I love how quickly it soaks into the skin (clearly my dry skin needs it!) and preps it instantly for step two.

Next, I apply a serum: Estee Lauder Perfectionist Pro Rapid Lift+Firm Serum. There are definitely products I skip on a daily basis (read: toner! Who has time?!) but ever since I did more research into serums a few years ago, I’ve really tried to make sure my daily skin care routine includes a serum because arguably the benefits of a serum outweigh even the best moisturizer – that’s because the particles in a serum are much smaller so they’re able to penetrate into the skin better than the particles in a cream, and a lot of dermatologists will say that a serum is much better for improving fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and hydration. After reading about all the research that went into this serum, I was excited to try it. The scientists responsible for this serum studied the 25 skin pathways responsible for lifting firming and rejuvenating the look of the face, and then created a serum to target, lift and firm key areas of the face, like the jawline, cheekbones and eye area.

Finally, I lock all the moisture in with Shiseido Bio-Performance LiftDynamic Cream. I love how rich the cream is and yet how quickly it soaks into my skin. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid, which in my opinion is the best ingredient you can use to get ultimate hydration for dry skin like mine. Hyaluronic acid is already found in your body, so replacing it with your skin creams does wonders. Immediately my skin feels super hydrated and I’m loving the long-term potential effects, from their studies: that after one week skin is firmer with less sagging, and in three weeks wrinkles are visibly reduced and facial contours more lifted.

Nighttime Routine:

The nighttime routine is similar to the daytime routine, in that I start with the Vichy Mineral 89. Then, I apply Lise Watier Sublimessence Nuit Regenerating Serum. Boasting natural oils at its core, this night serum has over 60% active ingredients combining a blend of natural and flower extracts that are infused with rose and cornflower petals (which is why the serum is so gorgeous.) Just a few drops delivers a powerhouse of detoxifying and regenerating ingredients to the skin, while providing antioxidant protection (which works while you sleep and protects your skin when you’re awake). When I wake up, I find my skin is way more glowy and dewy, and I attribute it to this serum.

Again, I lock in the moisture with Shiseido Bio-Performance LiftDynamic Cream. In addition to the benefits I mentioned above, the cream works to help that renewal process along (the one that super-slows down as we age) so skin looks softer, firmer and more evenly toned. And I definitely think it’s working.

And that’s it! Three steps and I’m loving the results so far, especially that this routine is customized for me. So now, when my friends ask me what moisturizer I recommend, I tell them that I recommend heading to their favourite beautyBOUTIQUE and ask for their own personalized skincare routine.
