Spring hair care 101
Thinning hair, grays, root regrowth? These are my favourite products to fix most common hair problems when transitioning from winter to spring.
You may have noticed that your hair seems like it’s getting thinner. It probably is. About 50% of women have thinning hair. It’s not something we really talk about but now there are so many fantastic products that can help with thinning hair particularly for women, but also for men. I really noticed my hair thinned after having my son, but I started using Nioxin, which is such a great line that targets six different types of thinning hair and then offers personalized solutions. You can use their online consultation tool to determine which line is best for your hair type and issue, and then you use the three system kit that’s best for you.
If you’re just getting a few grays here or there, I love Schwarzkopf’s new Hair Mascara. It looks exactly like mascara, but touches up strands that are coming in gray. Pop it in your purse or gym bag so you can touch up on the go. You can find it at drugstores.
Spray root retouchers are my absolute favourite for touching up my roots between salon visits. I used to use at-home permanent root retouchers but I found that the colour match wasn’t perfect and caused a harsh line in the grow-out phase. Now, I like both Schwarzkopf Root Retoucher and L’Oreal Magic Root Cover Up.
I recently fell in love with Drybar Dry Conditioner. What’s a dry conditioner? It looks like dry shampoo but instead of spraying it on roots, you spray it mid-shaft to ends to hydrate dry hair. My hair tends to get more and more dry the longer I go without washing it, so I use this to hydrate my hair on day 3 or 4.
If you find you have to wash your hair daily because of greasy roots, my favourite dry shampoo is Herbal Essences Bio:Renew dry shampoo. No residue, it’s light, and absorbs quickly.
Cheap and cheerful, nothing beats John Frieda Frizz-Ease Extra Strength Serum for making your hair smooth without weighing it down.
